Yet another fantastic dining experience can be had at the Greek at the Harbor (1583 Spinnaker Drive; greekventuraharbor.com), located very near the Island Packers station. Owned and operator by husband-wife team Makis and Lynn Mikelatos, the restaurant simmers with authenticity. Much of the staff are Greek natives, as is Makis, the most gracious host who loves sharing his culture. On weekends, his sons perform traditional Greek folk dancing. The restaurant is especially renowned for its first-rate lamb dishes. One bite of a savory lamb chop can elicit tears of joy. One is also advised to try traditional Greek wine Retsina with its piney flavoring or the powerful after-dinner drink Idonika.

Mikelatos of Ventura, named volunteer of the year

In recognition of setting the highest standards of philanthropy, three Ventura County residents and two from Santa Barbara will be honored next week by the Association of Fundraising Professionals.

The honorees are Lynne Mikelatos of Ventura, volunteer of the year; Rebecca Merrell of Moorpark, professional fundraiser of the year; and Ted Jensen of Port Hueneme, philanthropist of the year.

Mikelatos said the honor reflects a lifestyle she learned while growing up in a small town in Texas.

"My father did a lot of volunteer work, although not too many people knew about it," said Mikelatos, who not only created the Ventura Commerce & Education Foundation but also has assisted nonprofits and institutions including the Coastal Marine BioLabs School, Ventura City Corps, Ventura County Greek Festival, Turning Point Foundation and RiverHaven Tent Community.

Serving others "has all just been a natural part of my life," Mikelatos said, "and it is important to make a difference in the lives of others. My hope is that my small part in volunteerism will change the path an individual is on for the better, or that a cause becomes closer to fruition."
